Introduction
As the industry demands more content. more expertise and more experts, the question becomes:
What makes you a recognized expert?
Is it certification? Is it having a book? Is it the fee you charge? Is it calling yourself an expert?
How to be Recognized as an Expert
Marcus Buckingham, author of "First Break All the Rules", said this in my interview with him:
"The
qualification of an expert, I think, comes from the people that you are
trying to communicate with. I think if they call you an expert, you are
an expert, if they don't, then you are not, no matter what you call
yourself."
Marcus also explained how you become recognized:
"You
have inquisitiveness and you have focus, and you can stay focused for a
long time in answering the questions that you hold deeply, and you can
then summarize what you found. That is really all you can do. What
qualifies you is that when people see that, they know that is expertise
right there."
My Experience
In my
career, I did not set out to become an expert. I was driven by my own
natural curiosity to research how speakers can emotionally impact
people's lives and change them forever. I am not confident on the stage
because I have studied platform skills; I'm confident because of the
knowledge I have.
Experts pursue their natural curiosity,
develop their material an inch wide and a mile deep. And Experts are
confident presenters because of the knowledge they have.
How It Relates to the Industry
Richard Weylman told me:
"What
expertise does is build value of the brand. Whether you like it or not,
self promotion does not work. You are only as famous as people think
you are. You are only as famous as people who know about you. So when
you become an expert the word of mouth allows you to become well known,
and by becoming well known, there in creates demand and demand creates
fee pressure, which creates added revenue."
Why This Is Important to You
Dan Burrus told me how money and expertise are linked:
"To
make money in this business, you can't focus on making money. You got
to focus on making a difference with your unique knowledge and knowing
when to say no."
If you focus on developing your knowledge, you will become a recognized expert.
Juanell's Simple But Profound Statement
It is not about the marketing; it is about the research.
